Hillary and the Granny Vote

Through out the campaign season, Hillary has reached out to a natural constituency, older women voters.  She's vowed to strengthen and protect social security, improve health care, and crack down on con artists who prey on older americans.  In Iowa, anecdotally atleast, it seems Hillary's outreach is working.

Now, I'm partial to Grannies.  I was close to my Granny(Granny Ida).  And, when I read about these little old ladies coming out to see Hillary, I think of her.  Granny Ida was a tiny, white-haired, midwestern, big hearted woman.  Lot's of energy.  Always cooking or baking for the family, though she never would share her recipes.  She gave me these prayer books every month, some of which I still have. She probably wasn't politically active, but she was smart.  A good investor.  There was a wildness of spirit to her.  She was a notorious lead foot, and kept cruising well into her 80's.  I tend to think she might have liked Hillary's spunk. But I digress.

So what about these Grannies in Iowa?  Patrick Healy, of the New York Times, sets the stage:

"They usually sit in the front row -- to hear her better, to see her better and to make sure they have a chance to shake her hand. Some lean on canes. Some have traveled a great distance. Some have never been to a political event before."

Apparently, Hillary's campaign has been careful to recruit older women voters in Iowa, and currently boast 479 of these voters, ages 90 to 110. The campaign believes these women, often the oldest among a family, could help recruit more voters. According to Ann Lewis:

"These women are the heart of their family network.  The 90-year-old mother or grandmother whose opinions really resonate all the way through the family." Ms. Lewis added that they had come out for Mrs. Clinton in other states with early nominating contests."

Despite that Hillary has targeted these voters with specific plans, in interviews with nearly 20 voters in their 70's to 80's, it was the qualities these women saw in Hillary, her "intelligence, confidence and capability", that are at the heart of their support.  These women feel those  attributes will help Hillary deal with the challenges that await the next President.:

"I think a woman, as head of the military, would be more apt to keep our boys at home than a man," said Dorothy Weddell, 85, who attended a Clinton event Saturday in Sac City, Iowa. "I'm a Republican, but I vote for the person. And she seems more willing to work things out and compromise."

The historical sigfinicance of her candidacy also drives support among these voters.  87 year old Ruth Smith, who traveled 160 miles to see Hillary speak, touched on this, saying:

"I told her that my grandmother was the first person in town to vote, and my mother was the second," said Mrs. Smith, who was born three months before the 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920. "And I told her I was born before women could vote, and I want to live long enough to see a woman in the White House."

Some of these women have never caucused or have not in several years, even decades, but Hillary inspires them:

"I've never caucused before, but I never felt motivated -- and then here comes Hillary," said Gwen Whitehill, 78, of Shenandoah, Iowa. "Women have brains, just like men, and sometimes they have attributes that kind of outshine a man."

The Clinton campaign asserts they are taking nothing for granted.  New caucus goers often don't show.  And, there are other older women voters who are not comfortable voting for a woman.  But, for now atleast, Hillary seems to have an edge with the Granny vote:

"A lot of them believe a woman's place is by the cookstove," Mrs. Smith said. "But I think Hillary's a very capable girl."

That was a really nice piece. I never liked Patrick Healy but that story was great.

I am kinda glad she has stabilized her campaign after that stretch. It was tough going for a while there.

Yeah, I really feel things are coming (none / 0)

together for her.  I've never seen an election where everyone from both parties was essentially running against one person, a woman no less.  The GE will be a breeze for her after this.  :)

Re: Yeah, I really feel things are coming (2.00 / 1)

Did you see the clip of Edwards in New Hampshire talking about the clinton/obama thing as petty .

That's just unbelievable.

After being on the attack for the past almost 6 months , now he has the nerve to say its petty and America doesn't need all of that.

What a crock , the man is just unbelievable . Talk about character. Does he think voters are that foolish ?

Yeah when I saw his act in New Hampshire , it just made me livid.

Maybe he thinks voters are just too dumb to see through it.

Well, I also found it unbelievable how Obama totally discounted Hillary's work as First Lady.  He basically made it sound like she had engaged in nothing more than table talk with Bill.

Re: Yeah, I really feel things are coming (2.00 / 1)

Yeah , then he starts throwing one liners out , trying to be funny , I don't think she was treasury secretary , he thought he had it going then , then he said he didn't think Madeleine Albright would be happy .

If you are going to choose someone don't pick someone already in Clinton's camp , Madeleine came out and then vouched for her.

I thought that was pretty funny , because those one liners caught up with him .

giggle.

Yeah you can't attack her throughout the 90's saying she was weilding too much power in the whitehouse then turn around now and say she wasn't wielding that much power.

So which is it ?

Re: Yeah, I really feel things are coming (none / 0)

That is an absolute crock.  I am thankful for some of the issues Edwards brought to the table, but unless he wins the nomination in an amazing parlay that appears to be hard to envision, his campaign will be considered a middling disaster.   Now he talks "petty" when all he was doing was throw petty bombs at Clinton.  All of a sudden he drops all attacks and pretends he never threw all those attack grenades?  People aren't that stupid.  He has been unable to gain traction specifically because people disliked his chosen attack-dog track, after all.

Re: Yeah, I really feel things are coming (none / 0)

Did you forget 2004 when pretty much everyone in the establishment was against Dean? Including the media.

Hillary has plenty of establishment support. Let us not warp things into a fake victim mentality. She has the support of the former President and his vast network of insiders. No man in the party running for President has such an advantage.

Re: Hillary and the Granny Vote (2.00 / 3)

I think every last woman in my family is going to vote for Hillary, except for my daughter, who has not quite turned 2 yet.  This will probably be my grandmother's last election and you know, if Hillary ends up getting elected there's something pretty special about that.

My mom is even more anti HIllary than I am for some reason. My sis is like me. She doesnt like Hillary, but will not lose much sleep if she gets elected.

I haven't noticed that much gender affliation with Hillary in my network. I know quite a few guys who are going to support Hillary.

Re: great diary (none / 0)

Check with your board of elections if she can vote by mail so you or another caretaker can help. Plus, even on Election Day all voters can request assistance from poll-workers with the ballot.

Re: Hillary and the Granny Vote (none / 0)

This is why she's going to win Iowa.  These people will show up, and there's NOTHING Obama and Edwards can do to peel them away.  The most important issue to them isn't the war, the economy, or health care, it's Woman President.  The nice change here is they're actually saying it.

by jdeeth on Tue Nov 27, 2007 at 10:24:29 PM EST

there are a lot of older women (2.00 / 1)

not supporting Hillary, but they are divided among several other candidates. That is the best news for Hillary, that Edwards, Biden and Richardson are all doing pretty well with older voters (Obama a bit behind).

We need to find a way to turn these grannies into real votes. I've already got a bus rental lined up for voting day, and I'm encouraging everyone to do the same.

Re: Hillary and the Granny Vote (2.00 / 1)

Older people sometimes have more energy than us younger ones.  I don't doubt for a minute what they are capable of.  Hillary is now 60 and has the schedule of several people, I don't know how she does it.

Another great diary book. My Granny Sonya passed away years ago. But there is something about Grannies, I just love them all. Granny Sonya would have defintely voted for HRC.
